In the ten years we’ve lived in a quiet pocket of suburban Houston, not far from Baytown, I’ve learned something that no Zillow listing or Instagram reel can really capture: cute towns don’t always look cute at first glance. Some of them don’t reveal themselves right away. They hide—behind long bridges, along ship channels, beside industrial roads you’d probably scroll past without a second thought.

After Hurricane Ike hit Galveston Island in 2008, there was little left intact plus there was a major impact on woody plants. A year later, the city agreed to turn dead trees into pelicans, dolphins and musical instruments.
Since then local artists have been transforming a historical part of the island, making elaborate sculptures to adorn many front yards. Nowadays, this tree art takes on a new meaning as a declaration of resilience and a wholeness with nature.
